Name Numerology Calculator

A name numerology calculator turns the letters of a name into three numbers: the Expression number from every letter, the Soul Urge number from the vowels and the Personality number from the consonants. Type a full birth name below to see all three, with every letter value and every addition, using the Pythagorean letter chart.

What this page is: a plain-English calculator and explanation of how a name is read in Pythagorean numerology. What it is not: a forecast, a medical or psychological assessment or professional advice. Numerology is not a scientifically validated method; Soul Aura uses it as a structured tool for self-reflection.

Calculate your Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers

Use the name on your birth certificate, in Latin letters. Accents are fine, and spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are ignored.

The calculation runs in your browser. The script on this page does not send the name anywhere and does not save it.

How the three numbers are calculated

Pythagorean name numerology follows five fixed steps. This calculator applies them in the same order as the engine that produces Soul Aura reports.

  1. Clean the name. Spaces, hyphens, apostrophes, full stops and commas are ignored, and accented letters are converted to their base letters.
  2. Give each letter a value. A to I are 1 to 9, and the chart then starts again at 1, as shown in the table below.
  3. Split vowels and consonants. A, E, I, O and U are vowels. Y is a vowel only in the two cases described in the Y rule section. W is always a consonant.
  4. Add. The Expression number uses all letters, the Soul Urge number uses the vowels and the Personality number uses the consonants. Each total is added once across the whole name, never word by word.
  5. Reduce. Add the digits of the total until one digit is left, but stop on 11, 22 or 33 and keep them as Master Numbers. If the total before any reduction is exactly 13, 14, 16 or 19, the calculator adds a karmic debt label.

Value 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Letters A J S B K T C L U D M V E N W F O X G P Y H Q Z I R

Worked example: Łukasz Wróblewski

The table was produced by the Soul Aura engine, not typed by hand. The engine reads Ł as L and ó as O, so the name has 16 letters. In the table, vowels are underlined. Added together they make 65; 65 reduces to 11, a Master Number, so the Expression number is 11. The vowels (U, A, O, E, I) add up as 3 + 1 + 6 + 5 + 9 = 24, which reduces to 6 for the Soul Urge number. The 11 consonants add up to 41, which reduces to 5 for the Personality number.

Łukasz Wróblewski, letter by letter (computed with the Soul Aura engine)
Typed Ł u k a s z W r ó b l e w s k i
Letter L U K A S Z W R O B L E W S K I
Value 3 3 2 1 1 8 5 9 6 2 3 5 5 1 2 9
Type consonant vowel consonant vowel consonant consonant consonant consonant vowel consonant consonant vowel consonant consonant consonant vowel

The word-by-word method gives a different Expression number for the same name: Łukasz and Wróblewski add up to 18 and 47, which reduce to 9 and 11, and 9 + 11 = 20 reduces to 2. Soul Aura uses the whole-name total, so this name reads as 11. The choice is a convention, not a correction, and it is the reason two websites can disagree.

The Y rule, W and accented letters

Y is the one letter that changes sides. It counts as a vowel when the name contains no other vowel, or when it sits directly between two consonants. In every other position it counts as a consonant. Spaces and hyphens are removed before the neighbours are checked, so the letter that follows a Y at the end of a word can be the first letter of the next word. W is always a consonant in this calculator.

How the Y rule plays out (results from the Soul Aura engine)
Name Y counts as Soul Urge Personality Why
Lynn Vowel 7 4 There is no other vowel in the name, so Y counts as a vowel.
Tyrone Vowel 9 7 Y sits between the consonants T and R, so it counts as a vowel.
Mary Consonant 1 2 There are other vowels and Y is the last letter, so it counts as a consonant.
Wyatt Consonant 1 7 There are other vowels and the letter after Y is a vowel (A), so it counts as a consonant.
Yvonne Consonant 11 3 There are other vowels and Y is the first letter, so it counts as a consonant.

Accents are handled the same way the report engine handles them. The calculator knows 310 accented or special Latin characters, among them the Turkish ç ğ ı İ ö ş ü, the Spanish á é í ñ ó ú, the German ä ö ü ß, the French é è ê ç, the Polish ł ą ę ś ź ż, the Nordic å æ ø and the Vietnamese and Indonesian spellings. Letters from other scripts, such as Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew or Chinese, and digits are not part of the Pythagorean chart and are skipped. If your birth name is written in another script, use the Latin spelling that appears on your passport.

What each Expression, Soul Urge and Personality number emphasises

The three numbers describe different layers of the same name. The Expression number is read as the way you tend to work with the world, the Soul Urge number as what you want from the inside, and the Personality number as the impression you give before people know you. They are prompts for reflection and none of them is a verdict. The general character of each number is also described in the Life Path guides linked in the last column.

Karmic debt labels: 13/4, 14/5, 16/7 and 19/1

In traditional numerology a total of 13, 14, 16 or 19 before reduction carries a label. It is read as a theme to work on, not as a judgement: 13/4 points to discipline and steady work, 14/5 to responsibility alongside freedom, 16/7 to humility, and 19/1 to using independence with service and compassion. The calculator flags a label only when the whole total equals one of those four numbers. For example, the vowels of Mary Ann Jones add up to 13, so its Soul Urge number is 4 with the label 13/4. Some authors also check partial sums, so another site may show a label that you do not see here.

Which name should you use?

Start with the birth name. It is the one the tradition treats as the base of the chart, and it does not change when your circumstances do. If you have used another name for many years, calculate that name too and compare the two results as a second layer. The Soul Aura report asks for the birth name and, if it differs, the name you use now, so that both can be read together.

Frequently asked questions

Which name should I use for name numerology?

Use the full name on your birth certificate, spelled the way it is written there. In the Pythagorean tradition that name is the base for the Expression, Soul Urge and Personality numbers. A nickname, a married name or a chosen name can be calculated separately and read as an overlay on the birth name, not as a replacement for it.

Why do I get 11, 22 or 33?

Those are Master Numbers. When a total reduces to 11, 22 or 33 on the way down, the calculator stops and keeps it. A total of 29, for example, becomes 2 + 9 = 11, so the result is 11 and not 2. The number is read as a more intense version of 2, 4 or 6 respectively; it is not a sign of being more special.

What does the Y rule do?

It decides whether a Y is added to the Soul Urge (vowels) or to the Personality (consonants). Y counts as a vowel when the name has no other vowel, or when it sits between two consonants. In every other position it counts as a consonant. W is always a consonant.

Are letters with accents converted?

Yes. Ç, Ğ, İ, Ö, Ş, Ü and other accented letters are mapped to their base letters, and a few special letters become two: ß becomes SS, Æ becomes AE, Œ becomes OE and Þ becomes TH. Characters from other scripts and digits are not part of the chart; the calculator lists any it left out.

Why does another site give a different Expression number?

Usually because of method. Some sites reduce each word first and then add the results, some use the Chaldean letter table, and some do not keep Master Numbers. This calculator adds every letter once and reduces the total once, which is why Łukasz Wróblewski shows 11 here and 2 under the word-by-word method. Neither answer is a calculation error; they follow different rules.
